School FAQs
Want to know more about the school workshops? See the FAQs below. Still have questions? Email info@cawellnesswalk.com.
Which grades do you suggest?
The workshops have been designed with 7th graders in mind. That being said, the workshops can be effective with 6th, 7th or 8th graders.
How many days can you spend with our school?
Unfortunately, we are only able to spend 1 or 2 days in each school, so depending on the size of your school’s student body, it is recommended that workshops be focused on a single grade. However, time permitting, we are happy to conduct the classroom workshops across multiple grades.
How many workshops can you do in a day?
We can do as many workshops in a day as your school has class periods. The timing is designed for a 50-55 min class period, but content can be adjusted to fit your bell schedule.
What is the deadline to sign up?
Leg 1 schools (schools in cities from San Diego to Santa Barbara must be confirmed by November 20th. Leg 2 schools (from Goleta to Monterey) must be confirmed by December 18th. Leg 3 schools (from Marina to Sacramento) must be confirmed by January 22nd.
How do we sign up?
To sign up, please complete the School Survey available here, and a CA Wellness Walk team member will contact you with further information on the registration process.
What are your credentials?
Melissa designed the workshops based on her experience mentoring 11-13 year old girls while at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a published author, and her work modeling diabetes was featured in the July 2009 issue of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics. Additional information about Melissa and the CA Wellness Walk team are available here.
How can we involve our school nurse?
We encourage the school nurse to be involved in the classroom workshops. In advance of the workshops, we can provide the school nurse with informational materials and resources from the American Diabetes Association. Then, during the workshops, we encourage the school nurses to help facilitate the group discussions among students. Finally, once the workshops are complete, the school nurse can remain a resource for the students for questions that may arise in the future.
Do the workshops fulfill California state guidelines?
Yes! The workshops are a strong addition to your school’s Wellness Plan, and the content is consistent with California’s Health Education Content Standards. More information is available here. Exposing your students to the CA Wellness Walk and involving them in the classroom workshops provides your school with another tool in your tool box to improve the health of your students.
